Great Britain’s Johanna Konta, world ranked No.8, is guaranteed plenty of home crowd support when she takes to the Anne Jones Centre Court and former world No. 1 Maria Sharapova is now confirmed as playing her first match on Tuesday 20th June.
The presence of other top ten players including Angelique Kerber, Karolina Pliskova, Agnieszka Radwanska and Simona Halep has got tennis fans clamoring to see the action unfold and the tournament is currently on course for record ticket sales.
Sharapova first lifted the Maud Watson Trophy in 2004. The victory proved to be a career breakthrough for the then 17-year-old Russian, as she went onto win the first of her five Grand Slam titles at Wimbledon just a few weeks’ later. “It was one of my most memorable tournaments as a young player,” according to Sharapova, who also won the Aegon Classic Birmingham in 2005 and was runner-up in 2007 and 2010. “I am so grateful and excited to be playing this event again and I’m looking forward to starting my grass court preparation and playing my only grass court event before Wimbledon at Birmingham.”
