Safarova, Kvitova and Muguruza headline fantastic Friday in Birmingham
Former Roland Garros finalist Lucie Safarova and two-time Wimbledon champion Petra Kvitova are among the stars lined up for Friday’s Aegon Classic Birmingham quarter-finals.
Safarova takes on expressive young Australian Daria Gavrilova in Friday’s opening match on the Ann Jones Centre Court before Kvitova takes on big-hitting Kristina Mladenovic in a match which is sure to feature some ballistic tennis from both sides.
2016 Roland Garros champion and 2015 Wimbledon champion Murguruza will be looking to continue her resurgent run of form this week when she takes on American firebrand Coco Vandeweghe. Vandeweghe, who is currently being coached by 1987 Wimbledon champion Pat Cash, scored one of the biggest upsets of the tournament so far on Thursday when she knocked out British No.1 Johanna Konta 6-1, 6-3.
“She hits a very big ball. So it’s quite difficult to play against someone like Coco on a fast surface like grass; when she’s hitting it well, you get few chances,” said Konta. “Me losing second round against a very good player on this surface is by no means a blow. It’s part of the game. Just because I am seven in the world does not mean I am entitled to winning every single match. My job is to go out there and do the best that I can.”
Italian qualifier Camilla Giorgi, who takes on 21-year-old Australian Ashleigh Barty for a place in the semi-finals, scored Thursday’s other big upset when she knocked out third seed Elina Svitolina.
