Wimbledon finalist and current World No.2 Agnieszka Radwanska will join Petra Kvitova, Angelique Kerber, Simona Halep, Caroline Wozniacki, Lucie Safarova and Great Britain’s Johanna Konta at the Aegon Classic Birmingham in the strongest player line-up in the tournament’s history.
The WTA Premier event at the Edgbaston Priory Club, held 11th-19th June, boasts a 32-woman draw packed with the best and brightest stars of women’s tennis.
Radwanska, who last played in Birmingham as a teenager in 2007, was runner-up at Wimbledon in 2012 and is also a former champion (in 2008) of the Aegon International Eastbourne. She was also runner-up to Belinda Bencic in last year’s Aegon International Eastbourne. Along with Petra Kvitova, she is one of two Top 20 players granted a wildcard into the tournament.
Agnieszka Radwanska said: “I’m really happy to be coming to Birmingham. I love to play on grass and I have heard really good things about the tournament. It’s important to get time on the grass and adding Birmingham to my schedule gives me the best possible preparation for Wimbledon.”
Aegon Classic Birmingham is one of the most prestigious showcases of the WTA Tour and is the region’s biggest annual women’s sporting event.
Previous winners of the Maud Watson Trophy in Birmingham include Billie-Jean King, Martina Navratilova, Ana Ivanovic and Li Na. Kerber won last year’s Aegon Classic Birmingham title before going on to win her first Grand Slam title at the Australian Open in January.
