On the second day of main draw action at the Aegon Classic Birmingham, British No.1 Johanna Konta overcame a second set battle to earn her place in the second round and continues her recent impressive run of grass-court form.

The world No.7, who was runner-up at last week’s Aegon Open Nottingham, beat Lesia Tsurenko 6-3, 7-6(6) to open her campaign at the Edgbaston Priory Club and set up a tantalising second round meeting on Thursday with big-hitting American Coco Vandeweghe.

Earlier on Ann Jones Centre Court, two-time Wimbledon champion Petra Kvitova cruised past fellow Czech Tereza Smitkova 6-2, 6-3. She’ll face new British No.2 Naomi Broady tomorrow, who will also be in doubles action with Heather Watson.

Lucie Safarova caused an upset as she ousted Slovakian third seed Cibulkova and battled into the final 16 with a 5-7, 7-6(7), 7-5 victory. The Czech saved two match points before she clinched the three-set thriller in two hours and 41 minutes.

Finally, Spanish sixth seed Garbine Muguruza survived a three-set scare up against qualifier Elizaveta Kulichkova. She fought past the Russian with a 6-3, 3-6, 6-4 win to secure her first victory in Edgbaston.
