Edgbaston Priory Club’s ladies’ squash team won the European Squash Club Championships in style on Saturday 17th September.
The team sponsored by Howden Insurance were dominant throughout the Championships, dropping only one game on their route to the Final.
The European Club Championships, held this year at Pontefract Squash and Leisure Club, bring together the very best club teams from Europe and feature many of the world’s best squash players.
Edgbaston Priory Club’s ladies team, which includes three top 50 ranked players, qualified for the Finals by winning the National Club Championships in April.
All five players, Nicolette Fernandes, Deon Saffery, Millie Tomlinson, Leonie Holt and Beth Parker train at Edgbaston Priory Club.
Edgbaston Priory Club’s men’s and ladies teams regularly reach the National and European Club Championships but this is the Club’s first European title since 2010.
In 2015, the ladies’ team were knocked out in the semi-finals so to come back this year and clinch the title was especially sweet:
As Mike Edwards, Head Squash Coach says:
“The ladies went into this year’s European Club Championships as favourites but this can bring its own pressures. To dominate the tournament and to win in such style is a fantastic achievement for the team. Our win not only confirms our status as the top team in Europe, it also gives us automatic qualification for next year’s European Club Championships taking place in Paderborn Germany and the campaign to retain the title starts now.”
