2013 Wimbledon finalist Sabine Lisicki has confirmed she will compete at this year’s Aegon Classic in June. The announcement comes as tickets go on sale to the public for the UK’s most prestigious ladies-only international tennis tournament, which takes place at the Edgbaston Priory Club from 9-15 June 2014.
Lisicki – the German No. 2 and World No. 15 is one of the first top female tennis players to commit to play at the newly upgraded tournament, following the announcement that the tournament has been elevated to a WTA Premier Level event, making it one of the top 21 WTA events in the world.
Previously won by Billie Jean King, Martina Navratilova and Maria Sharapova, the Aegon Classic is one of the world’s major grass court tournaments, taking place ahead of The Championships, Wimbledon. Lisicki herself was crowned Aegon Classic champion in 2011.
Commenting on her announcement to play at the Aegon Classic at the Edgbaston Priory Club, Lisicki said: “I’m delighted to be back at the Aegon Classic once again this year. Birmingham is a very special place for me, having won the title in 2011. With the Aegon Classic now a WTA Premier Level tournament, there will be some great competition so I’m looking forward to getting back on the grass.”
